The Summer Book (PG): 28th & 29th August
Following the death of her mother, six-year-old Sophia, her father, and grandmother share their days in the family’s summer cabin on a remote island in the Finnish archipelago. As Sophia’s introverted father retreats into his quiet sorrow, the girl turns to her sharp-witted grandmother for companionship. Over the course of the summer, the pair embark on small daily adventures across the island. Through blunt, unfiltered conversations about God, death, fear, and love, Sophia’s grandmother guides her through the unformed terrain of childhood loss. In turn, Sophia’s vibrant curiosity offers her grandmother a sense of presence and purpose, helping her make peace with the end of her own life before the season turns.
“This sensitive adaptation of Jansson’s 1972 novel, set in the beatific Gulf of Finland, is a quiet treatise on life and death.” – The Guardian
