We Trailed the Sioux

Paul L. Hedren

They were ordinary men fighting Indians in 1876, in America’s glorious Centennial year. Thousands of common soldiers- privates, corporals, and sergeants of the infantry, cavalry and eventually artillery- waged a massive Indian war on the northern plains for nearly two years, following officers’ orders and long, dusty trails that often led to brutal combat with the Sioux and their Northern Cheyenne allies.
